Kolkata's iconic Metro Railway is poised for a significant transformation by the year 2026, as authorities announce plans to introduce a fleet of new air-conditioned (AC) rakes. These modernized train carriages will be manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and promise a host of innovative features to enhance the commuter experience.

The new AC fleet will feature an aesthetically pleasing design inspired by Bengal's bridal and terracotta artwork, incorporating distinctive nose cone design in the rakes. This blend of modernity and local artistry aims to provide a unique visual experience for passengers.

To cater to the evolving needs of passengers, each coach will be equipped with USB mobile phone charging ports on both sides. Moreover, provisions for standing seats, especially in areas with limited space, will accommodate airport-bound travelers by allowing them to stow their luggage beneath these seats. Additionally, anti-skid flooring, fire extinguishers, grab handles, and handle loops will enhance passenger comfort and safety.

In the interest of passenger safety and convenience, every coach will feature strategically placed CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring. An innovative "Talk to Driver Unit" will enable commuters to communicate with the motorman in case of emergencies. Furthermore, special digital display boards will offer infotainment material during peak hours to keep passengers engaged.

This ambitious makeover project, designed to meet the changing demands and expectations of commuters, is set to elevate the Kolkata Metro experience. With plans to introduce 85 new rakes in phases, the current fleet of 46 rakes will expand to 131. The Railway Ministry is said to have sanctioned Rs. 6,000 crores for the procurement of the rakes.
